Should I Book A Maternity Photoshoot?

Many of my expectant mums have told me it’s hard to love their growing bodies. As a mum of three, I get it. It can feel like you don’t have as much control of your body as you used pre-pregnancy, and there can feel like there’s a general pressure from society to look a certain way – even when you’re expecting! Please know that you aren’t alone in this. Can I emphasise that it shouldn’t be the reason to decide against a maternity photoshoot? I have beautiful gowns, tips, tricks, lighting and posing that can all work together to help you celebrate the beautiful mama that you are.

Some women are excited about the opportunity to capture their pregnancy journey with a maternity photoshoot, and others can be hesitant or unsure. Let’s chat about why you might want to consider getting maternity photos, because if you’re like me, you love a good pros/cons list.

Capturing a Special Moment in Time

As cliche as it is, pregnancy is a unique time in a woman’s life. While it feels like it takes forever, the reality is that it will come to an end. When you have a maternity photoshoot, you can capture this special moment in time and create a lasting and positive memories of your pregnancy journey. These photos can be a beautiful way to celebrate your body and the amazing changes it’s going through as you prepare to welcome your new baby into the world.

One of my recent mums was undecided about having a maternity photoshoot. Here is her story:

Initially, I did not want to do a maternity photoshoot. I’m one of those people who hates getting my photo taken at the best of times, let alone when pregnant and not feeling great. My husband and I met with Rachel and she went through the process and different options for us. My husband convinced me to do the photoshoot in case I regretted not doing so in the future. I am really glad I listened.

Prior to the photoshoot, Rachel was amazing. She happily answered my many questions, gave me ideas on what to wear and made me feel really comfortable. The day of the photoshoot arrived and I was not really keen at first (I hadn’t slept the night before and was pretty tired). Rachel arrived at my home and set up for the photoshoot. My mood instantly changed to excitement.

Rachel made the process really fun and had many creative ideas for the photos. I felt so comfortable with Rachel. The photos she took looked amazing and we ended the photoshoot with my husband and I both so happy and glad we chose to do one. We cannot wait for our newborn photoshoot!

If you are struggling with the decision of whether you do a maternity photoshoot or not, I completely get it.

I would highly recommend you do one and book Rachel as you will not regret it.

Including the Whole Family

A common question I get asked is if we can include partners, older siblings and sometimes furbabies as well! Please know that with me, everyone is welcome. In fact, they are not only welcome, I encourage it!

My clients love how patient I am with children, and have them included and having fun at their photoshoot. It is just as much about them, as it is for the parents. Including everyone in your maternity photoshoot reinforces how important everyone is within the family. At a time of big change, this is a very special message to send to your soon to be big brother/ sister.

Creating Memories for Your Baby

One thing that I know for sure – all kids love to hear stories and see photos about themselves. When your child grows up, they may be interested in seeing what you looked like when you were pregnant with them. Maternity photos can be a beautiful way to show your child what you looked like during this special time. They can also serve as a reminder of the love and excitement you felt as you prepared to welcome them into the world.

I know it’s hard to imagine that far into the future, but truly, they just love it! Imagine snuggling in with them on the couch in 3, 4, 5 and more years, sitting with your little one, looking through your photos.

There is now also evidence that reinforces the positive impact on belonging and self esteem in our kids, simply by displaying family photos in our homes! Read more about that here.

The Investment

It’s worth talking about, as we want to make sure you have a wonderful experience – whether it’s with me, or someone else. I find it useful to consider the investment of a maternity photoshoot as one of the prepping-for-baby purchases that has the highest value. Cots, prams, and especially clothing won’t be used for long, they grow so fast!. Your images are forever, and it’s worthwhile to enjoy the experience with a professional.
