When it comes to number 2 (or 3, or more), you have a lot going on! You’re already in the whirlwind (tornado sometimes) of parenting. As a mum of 3, I remember how hard it feels to come up for air. Add onto that the exhaustion and sickness that pregnancy includes, and it feels like a lot. I get it and I’ve felt it.
But it’s not all hard! Expecting your second means that you have experience now, that you’ve done this before. You have more than an inkling of what to expect! An honest and realistic expectation, because now, it’s not your first rodeo.
A quick note: I mention toddlers in this post alot, but I do acknowledge there are lots of mamas with older kids as well. These tips apply just as much to you, but hopefully they might be a smidge more cooperative as they mature.
Let’s look at what to expect second time (ore more) around, and tips to plan your maternity photoshoot. And if you’re on the fence about it, why other mums have decided to make sure it was a priority.

Preparation is Key: Tips for a Seamless Photoshoot Experience
Planning a maternity photoshoot with a toddler is acheiveable! Let’s make it a smooth and enjoyable experience. Here are some essential tips to consider:
- Choose the Right Time: Schedule the photoshoot at a time when your toddler is well-rested and happy. This is often in the morning or after naptime. This can work for sunset as well, if you have a playful, adventurous little one. If they love the beach, let’s go to the beach! Setting them up for successful photoshoot means playing to their strengths.
- Communicate Expectations: Prepare your toddler for the photoshoot. One of my favourite tips is to show them photos of me, let them know I’m a friend and we are going to have some fun. There’s zero pressure about sitting still, or behaving – if they have fun, we will get some amazing photos.
- Bring Comfort Items: Pack snacks, toys, and other comfort items to keep your toddler happy. One snack to definitely avoid though is chocolate! It makes their teeth brown, often makes a mess and takes longer to eat. Something like crackers, sultanas, are much more suited to photoshoots.
- Coordinate Outfits: Select outfits for your family that complement each other and reflect your personal style. I help make this easy with a client wardrobe for mama. I also have a What to Wear ebook that is a great starting point for selecting outfits.
- Choose the Right Location: Select a location that allows your toddler to roam. I have plenty of options! From indoor, studio setups (see more options here) to beaches, gardens and more. It’s a matter of matching your style preferences to a location!
- Timeframe: there’s a good chance your belly will be showing earlier this time around. Maternity photoshoots for your second babies are best held between 30-35 weeks give or take a little either side for your individual situation.

Capturing Authentic Moments: The Importance of Including Your Toddler
Let’s focus on those authentic moments of connection and love with your toddler. Here’s why a maternity photoshoot with your toddler is so important:
- Bonding Experience: It provides an opportunity for your toddler to bond with you and their future sibling in a fun and genuine way. I’ll encourage them to interact with you and the baby bump, so you can always remember these moments. A maternity photoshoot is a celebration with them, and for them.
- Documenting Milestones: It’s cheesy, but so true! Involving your toddler in a maternity photoshoot if a great way to document this family milestone. These photos serve as a tangible reminder of this journey, from the anticipation of pregnancy to the joy of welcoming a new baby into the family (that’s where the newborn photoshoot comes in!).
- Creating Memories: Your maternity photos will become even more special as the years fly by. I know my kids love seeing how I looked when I they were still inside my belly!

You spend so much time trying to parent and be pregnant… It’s nice to take a moment to stop, breathe, and celebrate the second born.

Professional Guidance: Working with a Photographer Experienced with Kids
Choose a photographer experienced in working with kids. Here’s why:
- Expertise in Working with Children: A skilled photographer knows how to engage and connect with children. This ensures you see those genuine smiles and expressions in the photos. I very much follow the lead of your toddler, I call it a child-led approach.
- Creative Direction: A professional photographer will provide guidance throughout the photoshoot. This means you receive meaningful images that reflect your family’s unique personality and style.
- Stress-Free Experience: Kids don’t sit still! That’s completely normal. Working with a photographer that understands and appreciates this helps you to enjoy the experience.
I know pregnancy is not all rosy, in fact it’s stressful, it often hurts and it’s downright exhausting. I do encourage you to embrace the positives of pregnancy though. Book the maternity photoshoot. Be sure to include your busy toddler and create beautiful memories that will last a lifetime. Your future self will be so glad you did it.

Second time around, I have found looking back on the photos to have more meaning than I ever thought they would. The moments before becoming a family of 4, the love already present from the older sibling, the excitement and joy in our eyes. Moments you want to remember forever.
